Deaf Awareness

Protect your hearing. It's not too early to start.

Good morning. This is Dr. Joe Cincotta. The 4th week of September is Deaf Awareness week. Although I have mentioned the importance of protecting our hearing in an earlier discussion, I thought this issue deserved additional emphasis. Hearing loss can be a condition someone has from birth or it can be acquired any time during one's life. It has a variety of causes from infection to exposure to loud noise. And the severity of hearing loss can range from mild to complete. What can you do to protect your hearing? Be sure that your children are properly immunized. Take precautions to avoid exposure to loud noise. Examples include loud concerts, prolonged use of earbuds particularly when the music is played loudly, and exposure to home power equipment such as lawn mowers or chainsaws without proper hearing protection. Ear plugs and headphone type hearing protection devices are not expensive. Take the time to use them. Protect your hearing. Thank you.
