Know Your Numbers

Be aware of your numbers and take action to correct them.

Good morning. This is Dr. Joe Cincotta. What are some of the different personal health related numbers you should know so that you can assess different areas of your personal health? One of these numbers is your BMI, or body mass index. This is a way you can assess your weight in relation to your height to determine whether you are underweight, ideal weight, overweight, or obese. Another helpful number is your blood pressure. High blood pressure can lead to a number of serious conditions, so knowing this number and taking action to lower it if needed can help preserve your health. Finally, your total cholesterol, good cholesterol, bad cholesterol, and triglycerides are important numbers to know and to work to keep in an optimal range. You can talk with your physician about what the ideal ranges are for these different numbers. Together with your physician you can map out a plan to keep these numbers in a favorable range. Being aware of these measures is the first step in staying healthy. The second step is taking the necessary actions to correct or to maintain these values in a healthy range. We can do this together in order to stay healthy. Thank you.
